This four-lane divided section, which cost $3.5 million, replaces a winding, inadequate road and a narrow 400-foot tunnel built in the early 1930's.On Friday, we only encountered 3 groups of day hikers en route to the pass, and 2 more groups of day hikers on the Ruby mountain trail. The descent down on Saturday (7/11) was another story- we encountered about 15-20 parties (about 3 on Ruby, the rest on 4th of July trail). Ruby Mountain trail was in good condition for an unmaintained trail.
